SV - Sailing Vessel - May Queen in profile Work Update - August 2001

Present Stage of the Project

Crane system - click to enlargeThe stern section of the decking has been removed to enable replacement of rotted sections of the ribs and deck support beams. The temporary plastic cover sheet is to reduce the effects of sun and rain on the existing structures. A temporary gantry (crane) has been installed within the stern section of the vessel.

The base of the gantry is braced on a solid section of the keel and wire stays on each side are tied back to solid fixing points amidships.

The May Queen has been leveled, using the water surface as a reference point, and the stern section has been lifted to take the droop and slight twist out of the shape of the hull above the waterline.

Detail of ribs amd bracing - click to enlargeThe lifting has been accomplished using turnbuckles attached to the gantry system. Replacement of internal ribs and bracing will now be undertaken to maintain the restored shape of the vessel.
